Library machine scans RFID tags report misplaced books

Introduction: After many people in the library read the book, they randomly placed in other locations. This phenomenon has caused trouble for librarians.

Researchers at the A*STAR Institute of Information and Communications recently designed an AuRoSS (Automated Machine Bookshelf Scanning) robot that can automatically shuttle through the library at night and report lost or misplaced books by scanning RFID tags on books. . The next morning, the human staff of the library can easily find books that have been misplaced by viewing the results of this report and return them to their original location.
This wheeled robot uses laser and ultrasonic sensors to guide it to work. Renjun Li, the project's researcher, said: "We decided to let these robots examine the surface of the bookshelf themselves and use it as a reference to plan the route."
With the help of a robotic arm, this robot keeps the best scanning distance of the tag by adjusting the RFID antenna: too far will lose the signal, and too close will hit the bookshelf.
Currently, researchers have tested the AuRoSS robot in various libraries in Singapore. The accuracy rate is as high as 99%. Researchers said that in addition to RFID sensors, this system can also be integrated with cameras, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc. Warehouses, retail stores, or medical technology, aerospace, and automotive industries.
