It has a name, said Danish photographer Mary Harder, these girls call it "Ana". “Anna†is a very real existence in their lives, it speaks to them, manipulates them, and makes them living in extreme danger. The Girls of Malawa tells the story of these young girls fighting eating disorders and documenting their six-week treatment in a small village in Poland.
When Hald traveled through Poland, he was introduced and discovered the sanatorium. This "light yellow house" is called Drzewo Zycia (tree of life). With the consent of the manager, Harder was allowed to enter the house to visit, and was surprised that he was quickly accepted by these subjects in the coming weeks and quickly integrated into their lives. Harde lived with these girls, ate the same six meals a day as they did, and learned a lot from them. These days, Hald heard their crying and heard their songs. She received psychological counseling with them. In the evening, Harder went with them to the upstairs to wash and light off.
Although many therapists and teachers in nursing homes are not fluent in English, Harder has reached a close communication with these girls with his rich expression, kindness and frankness. They confessed to Harder and expressed their sorrow, and believed that she would use these photos with their own protagonists as a warning to avoid others “re-sacing the same mistakesâ€; as a request for understanding and cognition; Express that those who are also struggling with bulimia or anorexia know that they are not alone.
“Dietary disorders don’t just lead to constant weight loss,†Harder explained. It stems from the extreme desire for control and from the desire to impose instructions on this noisy world. This condition erodes all aspects of daily life. This dangerous extreme desire is not special, and Harder admits that he has this desire for something that is hard to reach. "They (the anorexic girl) can see the shadow of my youth," she said.
“The road to recovery is rugged,†Harder admitted, and for these Marawa girls, the road ahead is still lost. The "voice" of "Anna" is lingering in the ear, and it takes inexhaustible courage and constant effort to shield it. Harde compares the fight against eating disorders to a cruel war, but this is a personal psychological warfare - some people who struggle in pain will have a hard time and live a healthy life; others are because of their inner feelings. The emptiness was defeated and eventually died.
In any case, photographer Harder knows the importance of his own photography. The subject of such photography is very painful and will bring some discomfort, but such a theme needs to be promoted and recognized. Most importantly, they worked with her to allow her to witness their most vulnerable side. These girls who struggled with anorexia made Hald feel proud. With these girls, she no longer feels like a photographer, but just a person who is worried about her companion body.

The temperature reached 34 degrees Celsius this day, and Kaia, Karolina, Ania, Carolina, Agata and Nikola sat on the lawn outside the sanatorium. They called this place their home. They usually lay a blanket on the lawn and spend the rest time after the meal and after psychological counseling. This Drzewo Zycia sanatorium was originally headed by Ella as the female principal. Ella's daughter had anorexia and was not treated effectively in Poland, so Ella founded her own sanatorium based on American treatment. Image source: Marie Hald/Moment/INSTITUTE
The 17-year-old Agata has been struggling for two years in the shadow of anorexia. “It’s all because of the healthy diet and calories in the student class. After the first successful weight loss of three kilograms, I fell in love with this sense of control. I was so lonely at the time, I didn’t express myself very much. For some reason, I think that losing weight can help me make new friends. Anorexia begins to approach me: I fall in love with hunger - it makes me feel strong. I have never been here before. I uttered a lie to my parents, but soon I fell into the endless lie and lies and stories I woven." Source: Marie Hald/Moment/INSTITUTE
"There is a dark shadow in my heart. I call her Anna." Kaia, 19, sees anorexia as a voice in her mind. Anna will tell her what a sinful thing to eat and tell her how ugly she will become if she gains weight. Image source: Marie Hald/Moment/INSTITUTE
After the last meal, the girls were allowed to stay in the upstairs dormitory. The dormitory is a three-person room, one for each person. Ania is singing, Agata and Wiktoria play the guitar for her. These three girls are hardcore fans of American singer Demi Lovato, who is also suffering from anorexia. When Ania feels sad, singing or listening to the songs of glutinous rice can make her relieve. These girls in nursing homes have a few things in common - they are very hardworking, very flattering, and they are all excellent students at school. Image source: Marie Hald/Moment/INSTITUTE
On the morning of the first day of the nursing home, 18-year-old Karolina and 19-year-old Kaia quickly became friends. They had been hospitalized before, Karolina was due to bulimia, and kaia was due to anorexia. After eating the last meal of the day, they routinely drink coffee and smoke before going to bed. After breakfast, Agata sat on the lawn. In the days of Drzewo Zycia, she read a lot of books. She is very anxious and hopes that she can get better soon and strive to pursue her life goals. She dreams of becoming a photographer and dreams of going to see an Adele concert. Image source: Marie Hald/Moment/INSTITUTE

Before dinner, Karolina sat outside with her teddy bear. In the nursing home, they were allowed to use the phone for only two hours a week, and Karolina missed her parents and boyfriend very much. Image source: Marie Hald/Moment/INSTITUTE
One night, Kaia and Karolina leaned against a bed to read magazines. In the morning, before the nurse found out, Karolina quietly returned to her bed. Image source: Marie Hald/Moment/INSTITUTE
This is the last day of the 17-year-old Natalia and the 19-year-old Kaia at the Drzewo Zycia sanatorium. To leave Marawa, Kaia was nervous, and she was worried that she would not have the daily diet and the life after treatment. Kaia decided to move to live with her father. Because Kaia was infected with anorexia when she was living with her mother, she was worried that returning to her mother's residence would bring back those bad memories back to her mind.
